Born in Ibaraki Prefecture in 1975. Based in Yamanashi and Tokyo. Received an M.A. in Fine Art Course from Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam. He makes works in a wide range of techniques such as sculpture, video installation and performance. In "Roppongi Crossing 2010: Can There Be Art?" (Mori Art Museum), Wiesbaden Biennale (various places in Wiesbaden, Germany) and "DOMANI: The Art of Tomorrow 2009" (The National Art Center, Tokyo), he stayed at the exhibition site every day for the long exhibition period and performed. In 2014, he started the project of "Perfectly Ordinary Stones, Carried for 1,300 Years." Taking up ordinary motifs such as apples, stones and humans and making use of extremely high-level technique and unique talking method, he offers experiences in which a person comes to get in touch with a different phase before they realize it and an experience of stepping on the accelerator and brake at the same time in their perceptions. With such experiences, he continues to make works that can promote the reconsideration of "contemporary" and "art."

Yosuke Amemiya
Ishinomaki Thirteen Minutes, 2021

In his practice, Yosuke Amemiya has adopted sculpture, video installation, performance, and a wide range of other approaches to encourage viewers to reconsider the universal phenomena and their dividing lines that visitors are not aware of in everyday life. Responding to the two disasters of the Great East Japan Earthquake and the COVID-19 pandemic, Amemiya, who was based in Berlin at the time (2021), made a theatrical and comprehensive installation in Ishinomaki. Through this installation, which is developed from the extremely personal starting point of a “family” and includes such varied elements as the relationship between the individual and society, those directly impacted by incidents and those not, the before and after of the disaster, and society in the midst of the pandemic, universal human consciousness and senses emerge as images.
